Madysin Hatter’s SONG OF THE WEEK
Song: MEDICINE, Artist: MoTHER
MoTHER is back with what is easily my favorite song of theirs yet. From the very first note, “MEDICINE” boasts a menacing demeanor that sucks you down and keeps you as its captive. Complete with a dirty groove, raunchy harmonica, unexpected scene changes, an addictive hook, and masterful musicianship, all you can do is give in to the craving…and grab your own copy of “MEDICINE” from iTunes.
Q: What was your inspiration for writing “MEDICINE”?
NICK FARGO of MoTHER: The song was built around the main riff and the heavy, drum driven pre-chorus. That pre-chorus is really what birthed the lyrical side of the song. It felt like a moment of racking your brain, trying to find the desperate necessity. The word “MEDICINE” is so relative, and we all have our own version— money, drugs, sex, companionship, family, etc…anything can be that fix!
Q: What’s your favorite lyric from “MEDICINE”?
NICK FARGO: The two verses explore each end of the spectrum between the victim and the villain. Both use a “by any means necessary” approach to escape their situation, showing that no one is immune to vices or demons. But I must say…”I need that MEDICINE” is just so driving, catchy, and tense. I picture people singing along with that line heavily.
Q: Describe MoTHER in a five word phrase.
NICK FARGO: Infectiously grooving rock and roll!
Q: How has your sound evolved since the last album?
NICK FARGO: We sort of took a step back and looked at what we were doing, and realized we weren’t completely satisfied. So, we just went back to our roots! Everything feels comfortable, it grooves super hard, it’s much more bluesy, and you can really move to it. The response from the public has been very reassuring that we found our place.
Q: What’s one of your favorite local hang outs?
NICK FARGO: The Park Tavern in Jersey City is an awesome old Irish pub with killer food (definitely try the burger). It’s right down the street from our studio and makes a convenient stop for us.
Q: When is your next local gig?
NICK FARGO: MoTHER will return to NYC April 1st at Arlene’s Grocery on the Lower East Side. We will be joined by our label-mates, Another Day Dawns.
Q: Congrats on the label release! What led to that?
NICK FARGO: Thank you! It happened sort of on the fly. We were playing the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA last year. Producer David Ivory was the keynote speaker and we had a short conversation. A month later, we were in his studio trying some different ideas. It was decided that we should get involved with Flexitone Records. We are so happy to be working with Dave and his team, and can’t wait to show everyone what’s in store!
Q: What’s your favorite song to play live and why?
NICK FARGO: That is a very hard question to answer…I should probably say this one, right?! Seriously though, the sets we have been playing lately are insanely fun. It feels like we have really come into our own with the groove. Much more feel and movement in the air!
Q: What’s next for you?
NICK FARGO: Our main goal this year is to play as much as possible. We will be getting out there on the road, hopefully starting in the spring. Some more studio time is in the near future as well.
Q: Heat wave or blizzard?
NICK FARGO: Another tough question, being both a snowboarder and surfer. If I were to put it in touring terms…nothing is worse than being stuck in a van with mediocre air conditioning when it’s one hundred degrees in Tennessee. Oh, and four other sweaty dudes.
