Madysin Hatter’s SONG OF THE WEEK
Song: STONE COLD LOVE, Artist: BITERS
The allure of BITERS runs much deeper than a sonic attraction. For the band is, in itself, a movement. BITERS calls out to all the underrepresented rocker boys and girls out there, who refuse to succumb to a time when mainstream music sucks. In a time of polished “paint by numbers” pop and photoshopped selfies, BITERS has managed to remain one of the most genuine bands out there, while still gaining massive popularity and capturing an authentic throwback sound. There’s a danger to them. One listen, and it’s clear that this band does not play by the rules. Their latest album, “The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be” is available for preorder on iTunes and through their record label, legendary Earache Records. The album officially releases May 19th, but preorder it now and you receive an instant track off the record, called “STONE COLD LOVE”. At it’s simplest, “STONE COLD LOVE” is a slithery love/lust anthem. At it’s most complex, it’s a stunning, rebel rousing reminder that rock will never die…if you know where to look. And while you’re looking at BITERS, be sure to dive into their already impressive catalogue— among my personal favorites are songs “Indigo”, “Loose From The Noose”, So Many Nights”, and “1975”. Screw it, just buy all their music. And if you think their music is great, just wait until you experience them live!!! BITERS guitarist MATT GABS graciously took the time to divulge a bit more—
Q: What aspect of your new album “The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be” are you most excited to share with your fans?
MATT GABS, GUITARIST OF BITERS: Well, it’s a little different than “Electric Blood” and other previous releases. You can hear how the band has grown over the years— still drawing from the same influences, but taking different things from them and breathing new life into the songs. It’s not just “another BITERS record”, at least not to me anyways…
Q: What’s your favorite lyric from “STONE COLD BLOOD”?
MATT of BITERS: “You kinda smile like a reptile. You slide and shake, you turn me like a dial…”
Q: Describe BITERS in a five word phrase.
MATT of BITERS: Last of a dying breed.
Q: What’s your favorite thing about being in BITERS?
MATT of BITERS: Traveling, meeting people, being partly responsible for people having a good time at our live shows. It’s fun and feels good!
Q: Who or what is your personal biggest inspiration?
MATT of BITERS: Having one life to live and doing exactly what you want to do with it!
Q: What initially got you into rock music? Into playing guitar?
MATT of BITERS: My mother, father, and sister got me into rock and roll. I looked up to them. I always wanted to be a drummer, but wasn’t allowed to have a kit. Then I found my Uncle Tony’s old Sears guitar from the 60’s and went nuts.
Q: What’s one of your favorite local hang outs?
MATT of BITERS: My girlfriend and I like to get drinks at Clem’s if we go out. Second Chance is cool too (both in Brooklyn). I try and pop into Manitobas if I’m in the area. But my real favorite spot is a secret cuz I’ve never seen anyone I recognize in there except the bartender, and I plan to keep it that way! It’s good to have one of those for special occasions…
Q: You guys are one of the best live bands out there. When can Jersey expect another BITERS show?
MATT of BITERS: When we get back from Europe with Blackberry Smoke, we plan on doing a lot of U.S. touring. You can bet NJ will be in the mix.
Q: What’s your favorite song to play live and why?
MATT of BITERS: It changes every tour, but one that has remained in the lead the longest is “City Ain’t The Same”. We have had that song in the set longer than any of the other songs we play live (with the exception of “Hang Around”). For whatever reason, I’m still not sick of hearing it or playing it. It’s one of my faves.
Q: What’s the craziest thing you’ve experienced on the road or during a gig?
MATT of BITERS: I watched a guy jump off the stage head first into an active ceiling fan, splitting his head open and landing him in the hospital. ‘Bama baby! They get down!
Q: What’s next for you?
MATT of BITERS: “The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be” comes out in May on Earache Records, followed by a LOT of touring.
Q: Heat wave or blizzard?
MATT of BITERS: Heat wave!
